GUMPTION
If we’re honest, we all have that one friend or relative who amazes us for one reason or another. Whether it’s due to their talent, skill, success, etc., we admire and respect them without question. My path has crossed with the few people like that during my journey, but none more than Kai.
Kai is a petite woman who looks years younger than her actual age. She has a beautiful face with a perpetual smile, a hearty laugh, a great sense of humor, and a heart brimming with love for her three successful sons, devoted husband, happily married parents, numerous friends, and a full life. Kai nearly epitomizes the Proverbs 31 woman, as she is an excellent mother, dispenses tremendous advice on most any given matter and, for all intents and purposes, is enjoying her life now more than ever before. By now you probably think that Kai is one of those people who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, whose buttered toast will always fall facing upward, and who’s skated through life without a problem. And you would be 100%…wrong.
Kai has dealt with a disability that has been her constant companion for nearly two decades, following a flawed surgery for a spinal cord tumor. Despite a few unforeseen accidents that have exacerbated her disability, Kai’s positivity, attitude, and enthusiasm aren’t diminished. The physical repercussions may have slowed her down, but her spirit, spunk, and tenacity are unbeatable.
Bridge
There have been times when I’ve given up and invited Ms. Pity to my party for one. And the longer I’ve allowed her to make herself at home, the worse I have behaved at what becomes my “self-pity party”. When I finally come up for air, and reach that place where I can think rationally, I will frequently think of my friend, Kai. I truly believe that rather than invite Ms. Pity to her parties, she invites Ms. Powerful, and the ensuing resilience increases her resolve and strength, whereas my self-pity spirals down into a much uglier pool of “me-ism”.

I believe God uses people in our lives to lead us, support us, nurture us…and teach us. Kai has been an incredible influence for me. I’m astounded that she is so matter-of-fact about her disability. She doesn’t use it as an excuse, and she doesn’t expect favors, pity, or preferential treatment. Rather, she strives to make others’ lives better, promotes others’ accomplishments, and seeks out the positive in every situation—good or bad.
She truly exemplifies courage, which holds a rung I’ve yet to reach on that ladder of life I’m climbing.
Substance
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control]. 2 Timothy, 1:7 (AMP)
I have told you all this so that you will have peace of heart and mind. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows; but cheer up, for I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (Living Bible)
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Galatians 6:9 (NLT)
